VENTILATION AND OPENING OPTIONS

Ventilation can help reduce humidity and the risk of condensation and should be considered in any areas of high humidity. Brett Martin Flat Glass roof lights may be unvented or can incorporate vents. These can be hit-and-miss, manually controlled trickle vents and are available in all sizes where a PVC kerb is an option.

How the "Automatic" Mechanism Works

The "Automatic" version uses a hygroscopic sensor. This is usually a bundle of specialized nylon or fabric strands that are extremely sensitive to moisture in the air.

  • At High Humidity: When the air inside your room gets humid (e.g., from cooking, showering, or even breathing), the hygroscopic fibers absorb a tiny amount of moisture and expand (stretch). This physical expansion creates enough mechanical force to push a lever or pull a shutter open.

  • At Low Humidity: As the air dries out, the fibers contract (shrink), which pulls the vent back to a closed or "trickle" position.

  • The "Hit & Miss" Part: This refers to the physical design of the vent. It consists of two slotted plates. When the slots align, air flows through (the "hit"); when they are offset, the air is blocked (the "miss"). In the auto version, the humidity sensor does the sliding for you.

Why choose one over the other?

  • The Manual Version is better if you are sensitive to drafts and want the vent closed even if it's humid (for example, if you're using a separate dehumidifier).

  • The Auto Version is a "set and forget" solution. It is particularly great for meeting Building Regulations (Part F) because it ensures the room is ventilated exactly when it needs it most (to prevent mold) without wasting heat when the air is already dry.

The Mardome Trade Fixed Polycarbonate Rooflight is designed for quick and secure installation onto flat or low-pitch roofs.

It can be mounted directly to a builder’s upstand or supplied complete with an insulated kerb, offering flexibility for different project requirements.

Installation guidelines

  • Suitable for installation onto existing builder’s upstands or with a supplied Brett Martin insulated kerb.
  • Ensure the upstand is correctly dimensioned, insulated, and weathered prior to installation.
  • Glazing must be correctly orientated, with the UV-resistant layer facing upwards (as marked).
  • When using the direct-fix (sloping) method, refer to the installation guide for appropriate fixings and sealing procedures.
  • Thermal fracture caution: Avoid placing blinds directly beneath the glazing; use light-coloured blinds positioned away from the rooflight to reduce risk of thermal stress fracture.
  • Minimum upstand height and slope should be checked per building regulations and installation guide recommendations.

What size should I order? How do I measure?

To determine the correct size, measure the external dimensions of your existing upstand or the internal dimensions of the roof opening if you're ordering with a PVC kerb.

Are polycarbonate rooflights suitable for a flat roof?

Yes, the Mardome Polycarbonate range is specifically designed for flat roofs and low-pitched roofs (up to 15°), making it ideal for these applications.

Do I need kerb for polycarbonate rooflights?

Not necessarily. Mardome Polycarbonate rooflights are highly configurable to suit a range of applications. If the unit is specified to fix directly to the roof deck, it will be supplied with a PVC kerb. If specified to suit a builder’s upstand, it won’t include a PVC kerb—unless ventilation or opening options are selected, in which case a PVC subframe will be provided to fix to the top of the upstand.

Does it comply with building regulations?

Mardome Polycarbonate rooflights can be specified to meet building regulations. Brett Martin recommends consulting your local building control authority before ordering to ensure compliance with your intended application.

What are the U-values?

Overall, U-values depend on the size and specification of the rooflight. Specific values are available on request.

Centre pane U-values by glazing type:
Single skin: 5.5 W/m²K
Double skin: 2.7 W/m²K
Triple skin: 1.8 W/m²K

What are the glazing options?

You can choose from clear, opal (diffused), and patterned tint glazing options.

How do I install it?

Installation is straightforward. The Mardome dome is delivered with all required fixings and an installation guide. For additional help, installation videos are available on the Brett Martin YouTube channel: Brett Martin Installation Videos.

Can it be installed on a pitched roof?

Yes, Mardome Polycarbonate rooflights can be installed on roofs with pitches up to 15°, offering flexibility in application.

What's the difference between single, double, and triple skin?

The difference between single-, double-, and triple-skin refers to the number of polycarbonate layers in the dome. Triple skin provides the best thermal performance and is recommended to comply with Part L of the building regulations.

Will a polycarbonate dome make my room cold?

No. When correctly specified, a polycarbonate dome will not make your room feel cold. It also enhances natural daylight in the room below.

Do I need planing permission?

In most cases, planning permission is not required for rooflight installation. However, Brett Martin advises consulting your local planning authority before proceeding.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes, the Mardome Range comes with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty for peace of mind.
